French lender Société Générale has appointed Wei Yao as its global chief economist for its corporate and investment banking ( CIB ) division.

In this role, Yao will oversee the global economic research team across the US, Europe and Asia. Her key responsibilities include defining the team’s editorial agenda, delivering impactful research through insightful cross-regional economic themes, and providing regular analysis of monetary and fiscal policy trends. Yao and her team will also continue to monitor and assess how rising geopolitical risks may influence the global economic outlook.

Wei will also retain her role as head of Asia-Pacific research, further strengthening, the bank shares, cross-regional collaboration across its global research platform.

She joined the bank in 2010 and has led Asia-Pacific research as head of research and chief economist since 2021. Prior to joining the bank, she worked in global macro research at Kuwait-China Investment Company ( now Asiya Investment ) in the Middle East.

Wei remains based in Hong Kong and continues to report locally to Mohamed Braham, head of global markets for Asia-Pacific, and functionally to Kokou Agbo-Bloua, global head of research for global markets.

“Economic research plays a critical role in understanding the performance of financial assets,” the bank says. “Close collaboration with other research groups will be essential to delivering value-added insights across global research and strategy for both internal and external clients.”
